A few days ago I received an email wherein the sender told me how much they like my art, and they wanted me to be involved in their project.  This was all very nice and I love to hear that people are enjoying my artwork.  Since I am a freelance artist, I am always ready to become involved in a paying project.  The problem is this-the person never told me in this email what they wanted.  They did not explain a thing.  They simply said:

"Hey Dan, I have this project and I would like you to be involved.  I love your art."

That was the message.  I know that first contact with an artist may be a bit intimidating if you do not work with us all the time, however, I must say that if you really want to pitch a project to an artist (or to anyone for that matter) you have to include as many details as possible in order to "sell" the project.  Simply saying you want us involved and you love our work is just not enough.  Not enough to even warrant any type of interest, at least not on my part.  Here is the thing, I receive countless emails from people who say they have an interesting project, and it may be as interesting as they think it is, however if they do not share the details of it in that first email how am I to know it is a project I would like to be involved in?

When the word "payment" is involved, then of course I am more interested.  Whenever I receive an email about an "Interesting project" and it does not mention payment or any monetary recompense within the body of the email, I am pretty sure it is a project I will not involve myself with.  Also, the term "Good exposure for you" is not payment.  Nor is it really that much of a benefit unless you are a world famous celebrity where the exposure may be worth something.  But then, if you were such a celebrity, payment would be no problem.  Therefore anytime I see the term "Good exposure" I naturally assume that no matter how interesting your project may be, you must have no budget and therefore are unable to pay for my services.  I am sorry, I just do not waste my time with such.

While I support people in their varied interests and projects, I must be concerned with recompense for my time and energy.  I am contacted daily by many people with interesting projects.......but no budget.  As a freelance artist and illustrator, time is money to me, each project I undertake must have a benefit to me as an artist, and monetarily.  I am sorry, but real world mechanics dictate that we must eat and pay our bills.  I must support my family.  I can not donate art for free, nor can I take time away from paying projects.  Do I sound harsh?  Am I an asshole?  Nope.  Just pragmatic and realistic.

So when you decide to contact an artist, please pitch your project to them just as you would any other professional person.  As artists we may look different, and we think in different ways than normal people, however, we are not the extremely laid back beatnick who ends every sentence with "man.........."  and hangs around dark alleys.  Most of us are actually quite professional.  We want, and deserve to be treated as such.

Hello everyone,

I know I have not written a journal in forever.  I have really neglected my dA account for the past couple of years and have really only popped in every-so-often to drop a bit of art and look around a bit at the art of people I follow.  I have not had a premium account in a couple of years and am starting to think about it again.  I just do not know if I need it.

I guess time will tell.  If anyone has any reasons I should/should not upgrade to a premium account again, leave me a comment.  I will take everyone's comments into consideration in my decision making process.

Thanks!

So busy!

5 min read
Hi everyone!

Wowza's I am busy!!

So far I have completed the illustrations of one book project, am currently working on another one for another Author.  I also have about eight other projects in my work que which include a fourteen page True Life story which celebrates the life, and sacrifice of one of our brave soldiers.  I have to tell you that I was in the United States Army for ten years as a young man, and even though I am seasoned, and have seen much, I actually wept during some of my time sketching the pages for this story.  It is so full of emotion as it is told from the point of view of this soldier's mother.  So moving.

This story is for the 2nd volume of Untold Stories from Iraq and Afganistan which will be in print early in 2012.  Volume 1 can be found on Amazon, and here:  www.heroesfallenstudiosinc.web…

As I mentioned earlier I finished the illustrations for "A little Monsters Guide on How to Scare Children" by Dustin Warburton.  I have not made a big deal of how I was able to do this book, however I think the story does bear to be told;  So a couple of month's ago a story broke which rocked the Comic art world.  It involved a guy named Rob Granito and allegations that he was a fraud.  If you really want to know so much more about that part of the story I would suggest you google "Rob Granito" and I am sure you will get a lot of information.  Anyway, there became a witch hunt on a certain facebook page and in several other sites.  Anyone who had anything to do with Granito were contacted and told about the nefarious dealings that Rob had been performing over the space of ten or more years.

Enter one Dustin Warburton.  He is a writer based in New York who as it turns out had hired Rob Granito to illustrate a new children's book he (Dustin Warburton) had written.  Dustin suddenly found himself hammered with letters, emails, and some phone calls from artists who were letting Dustin know about Rob Granito.  Dustin at first really tried to defend Rob.  Until it began to dawn on him that, well, Rob has been "working" on the illustrations for over six month's yet Dustin had not seen a single one yet.  Nothing.  Zip.  Nadda.

Dustin released a letter in which he stated that due to the information that had come to light on Rob Granito, he (Dustin) was entertaining the idea of hiring a new artist to illustrate this book.  Even though I knew he would have hundreds of artists contacting him, I sent him a link to my online portfolio anyway.  About three days later I received an email from Dustin Warburton's attorney asking me to call Mr. Warburton!  To make a long story short, I called, we hit it off, he loved my art style and within the hour he sent me a contract to sign.  Because I knew he was on a certain schedule, and the whole Granito thing threatened that schedule, I devoted all of my time to Dustin's book.  Within ten days I had illustrated his thirty-two page childrens book, and had it ready for print.  That is how it is done!

And here it is:  dustinwarburton.com/dustins_5t…

And here I am:  dustinwarburton.com/dustins_te…

I should also be able to post links later on where to actually purchase this book.

As I stated earlier, I am currently working on another book by another Author.  This is also a Halloween story for children and is quite cute and fun.  I should have this book done in a couple of weeks.  I will let you know more information when it is available.

I have also finished my part of a project with some good art friends.  It is called the Notes project.  It is a collection of graphic stories from a group of artists.  Each artist tells a story in comic form.  The stories were inspired by a certain piece of music that each artist listens to while they create.  It is a unique idea and was a fun project to do.  It will be available for purchase soon and you can find it here:  notescomic.com/

I also have some exciting projects which are contracted with some sports celebrities.  I can not talk about those yet, however, I can say they are books for children.  The celebrities are very famous, and this is an exciting time for me!

And of course I have the Ye Gawds! webcomic.  The webcomic is updated every Tuesday morning, and I am soon to publish the first issue of Ye Gawds! through Ka-blaam.  So go check out the webcomic, vote at the bottom of the page and let me know you support it!

Spring

5 min read

Hello everyone!

I think the weather is finally starting to break and spring is beginning to bloom!  It is actually warm here in Michigan! Finally!  This winter has not been a horrible one, I have certainly seen worse.  However, I am just tired of the snow and cold.  I am ready to be able to go outside in short sleeves and shorts and walk around our neighborhood.  Of course, the bad thing is the amount of people out here who like to burn piles of leaves, and tree limbs on the road, or in their yards.  It ruins a perfectly wonderful day when you suddenly have the smell of billowing smoke invade your home through the open windows.  I have air conditioning, but I would much rather be able to enjoy the cool breeze in the morning and evening, however, sometimes the neighbors just have to ruin it with the burning.

I am still working on the Ye Gawds! webcomic.  I plan to publish it through Kablam once I have enough material for a single issue.  I have about five more pages to produce until I am ready to achieve that goal.  In the meantime you can enjoy the webcomic here:  yegawds.thecomicseries.com/

As I stated on Independent Road with :iconpeterpalmiotti: a couple of weeks ago on episode # 23, found here: www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/… will soon announce a contest.  This contest will give you the opportunity to contribute to Ye Gawds! and possibly be included in my first printed issue!  Along with some other great prizes that I have planned, this is going to be a fun contest.  Stay tuned for details!

I am currently working on a children's book.  It is titled:  The Little Monsters Guide on "How to Scare Children"
It is a fun little book which is sort of a ten-step program on how monsters should go about scaring children.  It is a little creepy and fun!  I am having a blast drawing the illustrations.  It is written by Dustin Warburton.  Dustin has written several books in the Horror genre.  One of his books is being made into a movie: Spiders in 3D!  I am very excited to work with Mr. Warburton on this children's book project.  Stay tuned for more details.

:star: :star: Update:

I have finished the illustrations for the book "How to Scare Chidren".  I completed all twenty-eight pages in ten days.  It is currently in the hands of the publisher, I will let you know when it is available to the public.  :D

I will also be working on some comic stories for "Untold Stories From Iraq & Afganistan" Graphic Novel #2.   This is a graphic novel which is made from stories submitted from soldiers who have served, and are currently in Iraq and Afganistan.  The proceeds from each novel sold is distributed between several military services which provide aid to soldiers and their families.  I personally served in the United States Army for almost ten years, so this project is very special to me and I am proud, and honored to be given the opportunity to contribute.

You can find more information on "Untold Stories From Iraq & Afganistan" here: heroesfallenstudiosinc.webs.co…

I have also been invited to participate in 4 different book projects!  I will let you know more as I am allowed to do so.

I am looking forward to making some appearances at some Conventions later this summer! Stay tuned for details.

Looks like I am going to have a busy summer as I am involved in so many projects, and my daughter graduates from High School also!  Whew!

Have a great summer!  :sun:

Unless you have been living under a rock I am sure you have heard of Robert Granito on the internet over this weekend!  It seems that he has been projecting and tracing the artwork of established artists in the comic industry and taking credit for them as "Original art pieces."  He has also been selling them for years at comic conventions all over America.  Somehow he has also used this stolen art to con the Convention Administrators to give him special "Guest Appearance" status, and billing.  The entire time that the REAL artists who actually created the artwork were oblivious to the fraud being committed just a short distance away from their own tables.

Since the story broke via bleedingcool.com in this story:  www.bleedingcool.com/2011/03/2…

The question of "Who is Rob Granito" was answered at least in part on the following day in the blog of Joe the Peacock: blog.joethepeacock.com/2011/03…

Since the story broke a virtual firestorm has erupted on facebook and twitter.  A facebook page was erected almost instantly and thousands of people became members in a matter of the weekend!  When this entire thing blew I visited Robert Granito's page hereon deviantART which had a little over 3,000 pageviews at that time, now at this writing there are over 16,000 pageviews on that page with many comments by a number of extremely angry artists and comic fans alike.  The entire time the fraud was being unmasked, Robert Granito was sitting at his table at MegaCon, hawking his (alleged) stolen wares.  He even complained to an artist who was incognito and taping him that "People are trashing me all over the internet, what did I do rape someone's kid?"  Rob seem's to think that what he has done is alright.

The entire time he has (allegedly) been masquerading talents that he does not posses at all, the actual artists themselves who actually did the work have lost out on sales of their art, and the convention space and many other things which could contribute to the well-being of that artist.  There are literally hundreds of artists now banding together to send the message to Robert Granito and others like him that art theft will not be tolerated!

He has achieved the fame he has so craved, although now that the mask has been removed, the fame is not for the reasons he wanted.  Now whenever someone swipes the art of a real artist and tries to pass it off as they're own it will forever be known as a "Granito move."  Dude, you just got Granito'ed!  Don't be a Granito!
